we begin with growing pressure on iraq's lead attorneys unite the country. secretary of state john kerry is expected to deliver that message in person. >> and 300 u.s. military advisers will soon be on the ground in iraq hoping to help stem the rising tide of violence there. abc's tahman bradley has more from washington. >> reporter: u.s. aircraft are flying over iraq 24 hours a day collecting intelligence as iraqi soldiers battle militants. additional american help will begin arriving within days. president obama has dispatched 300 u.s. troops who will serve as military advisers. the president ruled out sending in combat troops but left the door open for possible air strikes. >> we will be prepared to take targeted and precise military action if and when we determine that the situation on the ground requires it. >> reporter: on capitol hill, many republicans are skeptical. senator john mccain wants air strikes immediately. >> the president of the united states goes for fund raising and

golfing and now is fiddling while iraq burns. >> reporter: sources tell abc news secretary of state john kerry is likely to travel to iraq soon for face-to-face meetings. >> this is the time to ensure that iraq receives the help that is needed to break the momentum of extremist groups and to bolster the capabilities of iraq's security forces. >> reporter: u.s. officials have become increasingly concerned about iraqi president nuri al maliki who has failed to unite his country's religious and ethic factions. >> only leaders that can govern with an exclusive agenda can truly bring the iraqi people together. >> reporter: the military advisers the president is sending in will be embedded with iraqi security forces to train and advise them. reena and devin. >> thanks so much, tahman. live in washington. thank you. there are also new details about the terror group trying to make their way to baghdad. >> that's right. a former u.s. ambassador to iraq who served in the obama

administration tells abc news that ooiz is more formidable than al qaeda was at the time of the september 11th attacks. they severed its ties with the group and they claimed isis was garaging its brand. a serious scare for scientists at the cdc. about 75 workers at the government labs in atlanta may have been exposed to anthrax accide accidentally. investigators say the rick of infection seems very low but the employees are being monitored and offered antibiotics. abc's dr. richard besser explains why the precautions are necessary. >> reporter: this is a very unusual organism and can live in your body for 60 days and can infect you. that can be deadly. 60 days of antibiotics plus a vaccine. >> a cdc spokesman tells dr. besser "we are devastated. it is unacceptable. we're going to find out what happened and we're going to fix it. there is no danger to the public." this morning minnesota seeps

to be the land of 10,000 floodf. this has been the wettest year in the twin cities area in more than 140 years. more than 4 inches of rain fell there yesterday and flash flood warnings are in effect. the people of a small south dakota town are cleaning up after a tornado. but thankful there were no injuries or fatalities. offs credit tornado alarms which sounded just moments before the twister plowed through the heart of the town. residents scrambled for shelter and survived. nearly two dozen hopes were i have toed and another 20 were damaged. in the forecast on this last day of spring, the upper midwest will see heavy rain. it'll be pleasant along the west coast and hot in the southwest and south. in seattle, the high today won't crack 70 but phoenix will be well over 100. the center of the country will be in the lower 90s, hotter in kansas city than in miami. a california lawmaker is the second most powerful republican in the house of representatives. kevin mccarthy has been elected

majority leader replacing eric cantor who steps down at the end of july after his victory mccarthy promised to help republicans advance their agenda for the country. one year after the supreme court struck down a key provision of the defense of marriage act president obama is set to extend a wide rank of benefits to gay culls. most federal agencies will now treat married couples equally regardless of gender. among the new benefits recognition of gay couples by federal immigration and the irs. president obama has presented the nation's highest military award to a 24-year-old veteran who almost lost his life in afghanistan. marine corporal william kyle carpenter received the pedal of honor for jumping on an explo exploding grenade to protect a fellow marine from the blast. carpenter was severely injured, he lost an eye and spent 2 and a half years in the hospital. the world of music has lost its most prolific songwriter.

down 37% this year. comic actor kevin hart will likely of prove his box office power this weekend. off their feet and sent debris flying. meanwhile, a yacht near san diego has been reduced to ashes after going up in flames. it was undergoing repairs at a shipyard when this fire broke out sending thick, black smoke into the air. 100 workers were evacuated but a drone mounted with a camera was able to get close enough to capture these amazing images. no one was seriously hurt. a high-tech new tool has been brought into the search for a firefighter missing in the southern california mountains. mike herdman vanished a week ago chasing after his dog during a backpacking trip. homeland security team is now using drones hoping to pinpoint his exact location in the rugged terrain. >> one of the major things that these things are going to be used for i think in the public sector is search and rescue and this will definitely raise the bar. >> searchers are also using harmonicas to lure herdman's dog duke. the dog has been spotted twice but ran away each time. >> now to a warning to anyone who has bought a lottery tick
